I believe the beauty of birth shines through the strength of a mother, the love of her support team, and the fragility of new life.
There's something you should know about me before you hire me to photograph your birth. I'm pretty much going to be silently cheering you on throughout your whole birth experience. I can't help it. I just think the entire event is so amazing. That mothers are amazing.
And then after your birth? We will definitely be keeping in touch. I'll hand-deliver your products in-person so we have a chance to talk about how things are going (and how you feel about how everything went). And maybe you'll let me hold your little babe? No pressure!
Birth is just too intimate an event not to have a tiny (forever) bond with each person who is present during your experience. But honestly, that's my favorite part of this job; sharing motherhood with other women... talking through the tough stuff and cherishing the beautiful pieces of the journey... together.

Liz, with your creativity you convinced my sweet husband that this collection will be one of our most treasured life pieces... Of course Henry's birth would have always been memorable to us, but you helped us recall the emotion and intensity. The Father has gifted you so... We are blessed by His outpouring through you! Thank you for being faithful to the things for which you were given passion. - Allison Y., 2016
We can't thank you enough for the memories you've given us. From maternity, to labor and delivery, and finally newborn, the photos you captured of the entire experience are absolutely heartwarming and we will cherish them always. You captured a beauty in the labor process that I would have otherwise overlooked. It would have been easy to remember it as painful (to put it mildly), but when I look through the images, all I can see is the love and support of my husband very clearly shining through. The joy we shared over the birth of our son is almost tangible, and I can't help but see only perfect beauty in all of it. Our family and friends still talk about how beautiful all of the pictures are. We love the keepsake box as well, and it is now serving as the perfect memory box for all of C's "firsts". It was a pleasure working with you and we are so glad we asked you to share in our experience of bringing our baby boy into the world! —Rachel H., 2015
I am holding my daughter right now as she sleeps, and looking through the gallery was simply amazing. There are no words for how it touches my heart to have such beautiful pictures capturing that day. I love each and every one. It makes the memories so much sharper; I can remember every emotion so clearly. To me, birth photos are as essential as wedding photos. I just can't imagine not having them. Thank you so, so much. You are so talented! —Katie Manis, 2015
Finding Liz was the best thing ever. I have never been so excited about something in my life. She joined us for Mackenzie's birth today and documented such an amazing moment for us. She is simply amazing and I am so thankful for her!!! - Kelly Jacobson, 2016
Ahh LIZ!! LIZ, LIZ, LIZ! These are AMAZING!!! You did such an incredible job!! These are fantastic and so beautiful and they took us right back to the amazing experience. I can't thank you enough. You made us both cry looking at these. I am so in love with them! Thank you for being there and for telling our story. I feel so fortunate that you were there and these images are such a blessing to have. We will cherish them forever and I know our parents and closest friends will be so thankful for them too, so that they can see his birth story! You really have given us an amazing gift and I can't thank you enough. —Angela Roy, 2014
I trusted Liz from the beginning to capture this moment with the utmost care. She asked lots of questions to see how she could make sure I stayed comfortable (because that was very important to my birth plan). She was available before my due date, e-mailing and texting me to check in, and on the day I went into labor, she was in contact with me throughout the day to keep track of my progress. When my labor sped up, she came straight to the hospital, even though it was the middle of the night. She was smiling when she entered the room.
One of the best parts of having Liz as my birth photographer was that she was completely unobtrusive during my labor, but she managed to capture every single, technicolor moment and I can’t thank her enough. Liz is not only a talented photographer, she is also passionate about women and their births. She stayed as long as it took to capture each of those new-baby moments. I am so appreciative of how much she did to create this beautiful memory for me. —Meghann Cope, 2014
Having Liz at the birth of our daughter was an incredible gift. I was unsure if I really wanted pictures of labor and delivery and thought, "how could that be beautiful?" I was so wrong. Birth is beautiful and because of Liz I got to see how beautiful birth is. Labor and delivery can be so hazy and easy to forget but Liz captured all the little moments along with the momentous moments and I now have memories I wouldn't have otherwise. I feel empowered, privileged and overjoyed looking back over my pictures and that is truly priceless. —Allison Earl, 2013
It's hard to express how much Liz Cook's birth photos mean to me. I had a difficult (and very long) birth and Liz was great about being there to capture the important moments for me and my family! Being able to go through them to remember and process all that happened during the birth of my beautiful daughter was incredible and very healing for me. Liz is professional, warm, and has a great artistic vision. Her work has always stood out for me and the images from my daughter's birth are no exception. She captured intimate moments with so much beauty. Even now, a year and a half later, the pictures take my breath away. I'm beyond grateful to have the images from my birth and will cherish them always. I highly recommend Liz as a birth photographer. Seriously! Use her! —Emily Graham, 2012
I watched the birth video the day after my birth while still in the hospital. I was, and continue to be amazed at how photographs can capture such real emotion. You have such an eye for detail. I feel like I am in the moment again and again, every time I watch it. I cannot wait to share it with my children and their children. Thank you, thank you, thank you for capturing these precious events in our lives that will mean so much for generations to come. —Jacqulyn Miller, 2009
Just wanted you to know you have brought so many people to tears it is amazing (in a good way)! I truly cannot begin to thank you enough! Our family and friends are so impressed with your work! Someone just sent me this quote: "That was the most moving and amazing thing I ever seen!" THANK YOU AGAIN SO MUCH!!!! There aren't words for how grateful we are for your work! You captured something so special that because of you, we will never forget! —Amber Bauckman, 2009
Frequently asked questions
WHAT IS BIRTH PHOTOGRAPHY?
Birth photography is the art of capturing your entire birth experience. From labor and delivery to your baby’s first kisses, snuggles and meeting family members... imagine those all encompassed in a photojournalistic and unobtrusive manner.
HOW MUCH DOES BIRTH PHOTOGRAPHY COST?
Due to the unpredictability of birth, the cost reflects the service you receive as well as the time invested by me as your photographer. I will be on call for a month surrounding your due date, keeping my schedule clear of all travel plans. $400 is due at booking to reserve your on-call month. All pricing is subject to Virginia's 5% sales tax for Virginia residents.
HOW LONG WILL YOU STAY AT THE BIRTH?
I arrive at your birth once active labor has started (about 5-6cm dilated) and stay until the baby is all clean and settled into your arms, usually a few hours after delivery.
WILL WE MEET BEFORE THE BIRTH?
Absolutely. It is vital that we meet and you are comfortable with my presence during your birth. If we find that our personalities are not a good match, I am happy to recommend other local photographers.
WHAT IF I GO IN TO LABOR IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT?
I ask that I am given as much notice as possible of impending labor (showing any signs at all) so that I can begin making arrangements for childcare, but I understand births happen at all hours of the day or night. You can call or text me at any time and I will be there as soon as possible, even if it is at 2am!
I LIKE THE IDEA OF BIRTH PHOTOGRAPHY, BUT I’M CONCERNED ABOUT KEEPING MY BODY PRIVATE.
I understand. If this is a big concern of yours, of course I am happy to respect your comfort level (which is of upmost importance during labor). We can talk in person about this and your limitations. I will be as honest as possible about whether or not I will feel your limits may restrict the outcome of your birth session.
WHAT ARE YOUR CREDENTIALS?
I invite you to peruse a full list of my experience, certificates and published works on my about me page.
WHAT (IN DETAIL) DO YOU PHOTOGRAPH?
Emotions. Moments. The story. We will discuss in person what you are comfortable with me photographing. Don't worry, I won't get that shot if you don't want me to. This is something we'll nail down before you go into labor!
WHAT ABOUT SCHEDULED C-SECTIONS?
There is a lot of activity surrounding a c-section that creates a story worth being told through photographs! I will come with you to the hospital and can catch all of the going on's as you prepare to enter the OR. If I am unable to join you in the OR, I will send my camera in with your parter (I will put the camera on auto). Once you are in recovery and reunited with your baby, I will continue to capture your birth story as you enjoy your first moments holding and snuggling with your new baby. I will process and deliver all of the images (even those taken by your partner).
WHAT IF I GIVE BIRTH PREMATURELY?
I will do my absolute best to be at your labor despite not being on-call. If I am able to come, I will of course be sensitive to the situation at hand and capture as much as I possibly can. If I were to miss your birth, it is possible to use your birth photography investment as a credit towards a newborn session, or any other type of portrait session.
WHAT IF YOU CAN’T MAKE THE BIRTH?
If I were to miss your birth during the time in which I am on-call (within 2 weeks of your EDD), you can use your birth photography investment as a credit towards any other type of baby or family session I offer.
WHEN I GO INTO LABOR, WHEN SHOULD I CALL YOU?
Please call or text me as soon as something begins to happen. This gives me a good heads up to prepare childcare for my children. Once you are in active labor, have your partner keep in touch with me and I will come right over as soon as I can.
HOW DO YOU HANDLE IT IF I DECIDE I DON'T WANT YOU IN THE LABOR ROOM WITH US FOR A PERIOD OF TIME?
I will step out of the room but will remain in the waiting room until the baby has been born. After you are settled, I will ask if I can come back in to photograph you and the baby together. There will be no refunds or product credits if I am asked to leave.
I DON'T WANT NAKED PHOTOS OF MYSELF ON THE INTERNET! YOU WON'T DO THAT, WILL YOU?
No way. Birth is beautiful and intimate, but there are plenty of images I can use on the internet to display the beauty of birth without showing nudity of any kind. That said, there may be a time after the birth when I ask if I can lay a blanket over you or the baby to help to keep the images conservative, but this is a very rare occurrence. If you decide you do not want any of your images shared publicly, I will absolutely respect your wishes for privacy.
WHEN ARE YOU ON CALL?
7 days before and 21 days after your due date - for a total of four weeks.
HOW LONG DO YOU STAY AFTER MY BABY IS BORN?
Typically it's about 2hrs or so before you are all settled with the baby. I can leave at this time, or I can stay for a mini portrait (Fresh48) session and grab a few images of you together, cozy and resting. It is up to you.
HOW SOON DO I GET MY PICTURES?
You will receive a few of the best images of your baby in email within 48 hours of the birth. The rest will be delivered through a digital download approximately 30 days after the baby's birthday.
WHAT WILL YOU DO IF SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH MY BABY?
I will assess the situation and make a decision in the moment. Most likely I will stick around for some time either until the situation has passed or until someone is able to update me. Then, I can use my experience to judge what my next step should be.
DO YOU USE FLASH? WHAT EQUIPMENT DO YOU USE?
I use all professional-grade equipment from the Canon line. I do have an external flash and I bring it with me to births, but I rarely use it. I love to capture the true atmosphere of births to help tell an accurate picture story of your experience.
What if I decide Birth Photography is not for me? WOULD YOU RECOMMEND AN IN-HOME OR HOSPITAL NEWBORN SESSION, instead?
Birth photography is not for everyone and I understand that! However, I would absolutely recommend booking some sort of baby photo session to capture these fleeting moments. A hospital session the day after your baby is born is a great substitute for birth photography. I do get asked from time to time to help potential clients choose between a hospital or at-home newborn session. Both session types have their own benefits, but if I had to choose, I would pick a hospital session, hands down. Those are memories that can never be recaptured and you cannot book a hospital session on a whim after you deliver. An in-home newborn session at two weeks or two months can always be scheduled after you are released from the hospital and can be similar. However, capturing the short season of your hospital stay and those first hours (literally) of your baby's life is a priceless investment you won't regret choosing.
