The story of Sunday's name

I've had a couple of people ask about Sunday's name, so I thought I'd type the story for those interested as well as for Sunday to read in the future. This is the long version. If you want the short version it goes like this: "We had a friend named Sunday and we liked her name. Then when our girl arrived on a Sunday, the name just fit!" Ta-da! :)

And now, the longer version. :)

Early in my pregnancy, Tommy and I nailed down a boy name. We never really wavered from that decision. But the girl name... that was a tough one. I was really, really picky. Tommy threw out a ton of fantastic ideas throughout the pregnancy but nothing ever really jumped out at me. I didn't LOVE any of the options. We knew we wanted something unique, but not something unfamiliar or strange. And a unique name today doesn't necessarily mean it will be so unique in 2-3 years.

During the week before Sunday was born, Tommy suggested the name Sunday. We have a friend named Sunday and I love her name, so it wasn't a bad idea. Except that I was seriously hoping our baby would NOT be born on that coming Sunday (which would be the only way we would use that name). I hoped I would go into labor before then (by then I would be almost a week overdue) but that day was also November 20th: my sister's birthday and her daughter, Shelby's, birthday. I wanted my baby to have her own day, you know?

So when I was in labor and Tommy brought to my attention that it was, in fact, Sunday... he planted a seed. Immediately (in my labor induced mindset) I thought "There's no way I'm naming my child Sunday." But as soon as everything was done and we were curled up in bed, he suggested it again. I agreed that it was a good name idea, but what would the middle name be?

Some of our previous ideas for girl names were Sadie, Sydney, and Shiloh. All S names. I didn't want to give her a middle name that started with an S since Sunday took care of that. So we were kind of stuck.

Tommy really liked the name Grey and I had not vetoed it yet... but when we decided on Sunday as a first name, I kind of felt like Sunday Grey just sounded like... a grey day. I mean, it does, right? And she's my little sunshine! Not a cloudy day! ;)

So by day two we were still without an official name and those Facebookers were getting impatient! Tommy messaged our friend Hailey, who has done an excellent job naming her own children unique and beautiful names. He asked her for some ideas and she threw out a few suggestions including the name Quinn.

Quinn. I love that name. My friend Angie was pregnant at the time with a girl she named Quinn. I remember when she announced the name, my first thought was "why didn't I think of Quinn? I love it!" So I told Tommy I loved it and I promptly called Angie to ask her if she was ok with me using her name. Honestly, I knew that wasn't necessary as there is a very slim chance our daughters will meet and be BFF (although you never know... it is a small world!), but I wanted to at least acknowledge to her that I knew I was about to use the same name. :) So after a silly little phone call, Tommy and I decided officially.

She would be called Sunday Quinn Cook.

And it fits!
