Lynchburg Snapshot Studio: Sunday's Birthday Party

While I was planning Sunday's first birthday party I was racking my brain for activity ideas. I knew we would eat and have a cake smash, but I felt like there needed to be something else to fill the time. I thought about a cake walk with toy prizes... or maybe a small craft for kids. But space restrictions and a wide variety of ages of guests limited a lot of the ideas I was coming across in my google searches. I didn't really want to have a gift opening time even though it probably would have been a great time filler. I finally decided to bring in Lynchburg Snapshot Studio. It turned out to be the PERFECT activity for a first birthday party! It was set up and running throughout the entire party so just when guests started to feel like time was ticking slowly, they could get up and hop in the photo booth! Everyone seemed to have a lot of fun with it and it was a great way to get pictures of all the attendees, especially pictures of them WITH the guest of honor.

Here are just a few of my favorite shots from the photo booth images... I can't wait to make an album of these for Sunday to browse through when she gets older!

letters to sunday: first birthday

Sweet girl,

9:16am... exactly one year ago you were placed into my arms. It was a moment that changed our lives for the BEST.

My sweet, smiley, snuggly girl. How do I say how wonderful you are without talking in circles and repeating everything I've ever said about you? :) You are my favorite little person in this whole world. You were the perfect addition to our family and you made this last year the best of our lives.

It's so crazy now... how much you communicate and understand us. It's like it happened overnight. You turned 11 months old and suddenly you understood everything we were saying. Here we are, one month later, and you don't miss a thing!
If there is something nearby to help you balance, you are standing on your feet. You love to walk around while holding onto furniture and every now and then you let go and try it on your own! Before we know it, you will be walking!

You say "Bye Bye" now with the cutest little wave! So that was officially your first word! You also say Dada and a couple of people SWEAR you have said their names (Aiden and Soda Pop!). So fun. :) We practice Mama and Grandma a LOT.

Now that you can sign you are constantly - and I mean constantly - signing to nurse. If you see your mama, you crawl right over to me look up at me and sign "more!" Which means "Pick me up and nurse me please!" It's probably the one thing that drives me a little batty. I find myself hiding from you sometimes so I don't have to tell you "no." Because that is your least favorite word in the world. And really, honey, you simply cannot eat all. day. long!

I finally finished your birth slideshow - almost a year to the day you were born. Looking back through those pictures now is a completely different experience than looking at them soon after your birth. I know that little baby now... I recognize those familiar expressions you had even at just a few minutes old. I hope one day you will watch it and see the wonderful experience we had bringing you into this world!

Have I mentioned how snuggly you are? You love ANYTHING soft and fluffy and it is the most precious thing to watch you squeeze and nuzzle your blankets or stuffed animals! And almost every time I pick you up you take a moment to lay your head on my shoulder... even if you are just giving me a little hug before you pull back and ask to "Nurse, please." Gosh, I adore you!

You are completely into 12 month clothing now... the onesies are worn less often and real shirts and jeans are worn more often. You are growing up!

You were so super behaved at your first birthday party! I pretty much expected that because you love to people watch so much I knew you would be completely content even if you were completely exhausted at the same time! Oh and you LOVED your birthday cake! Well, mostly you liked the whipped cream icing, but that was to be expected!

As I type, you are napping away after playing in your crib with some books. This week you started falling asleep on your own, peacefully and quietly, when laid in your crib with a few toys. It's a whole new world for us and we both seem to really enjoy it. :)

When you wake we are going out for your birthday! Your Aunt Carrie and Uncle Zac are here (which is appropriate since they were like two of four people who had to miss your party) and we are going to spoil you all day!

Happy Birthday beautiful angel! You are the light of our lives... have I already mentioned that?!

The Home Birth Slideshow of Sunday Quinn

A Week of Sundays What better way to wrap up A Week of Sundays than with the grand finale of her birth slideshow! :)

If you haven't already, feel free to read my birth story before you watch the slideshow.

Sunday Quinn's Birth Story, pt. 1 Sunday Quinn's Birth Story, pt. 2

A year after Sunday was born, I have finally put the finishing touches on her slideshow. This is the first slideshow I've created using iMovie and it was easy and complicated at the same time! I am sure there were easier ways to do a lot of the things I did but I had to go about just doing it the only way I knew how! I am happy with how it turned out... even if some of the tight crops feel a little too intimate. :) I think it's a great illustration of the last 5 hours of our labor and delivery experience with Sunday.

Even though I was pretty detailed with my birth story and I shared some pretty rough pictures of myself along with it... it is still a little nerve wracking sharing this whole slideshow with you all. But... I'm taking a deep breath and hitting "publish." I hope it encourages just ONE person to stop and research their options for labor and delivery... because it really can be a wonderful and empowering experience for women!

A Week of Sundays: Day 7 | Sunday's Birthday Party

A Week of Sundays

Trying to plan baby's first birthday party  is... confusing. I knew Sunday wasn't going to remember much, but I also didn't want to skip this milestone. It was something to be celebrated, for sure! After a lot of hemming and hawing, I finally decided to approach the celebration as a Thank You for all of those people who have helped us out this year: babysitters, nannies, family and friends who played significant roles in our lives as we adjusted to our new identity as a family of three.

I decided to have Sunday's party at The Farm Basket. I adore their little space upstairs and they make delicious food! I knew planning a party in the middle of my busiest season was going to be a challenge, so catering was definitely something I was hoping to take advantage of! I ordered up some delicious quiches, a cheese & cracker tray, and a fruit platter for a mid-morning brunch. I scheduled the party right between Sunday's nap times and it ended up working out perfectly.

My friend Joy helped me with the decorations and we started by picking out a handful of patterns. From the pretty fabrics, Joy created a banner for the party as well as some pom poms to hang above the food table. I took the fabric swatches to my friend Penny who made the awesome cupcakes and smash cake for us! She hand painted the designs from the fabric swatches onto the cupcake squares! All 36 of them! So incredible! (And don't even get me started on how DELICIOUS the cupcakes were!! She asked me my favorite cake/icing combination and I told her yellow cake / chocolate frosting. However, I didn't want dark colors on the cupcakes so I told her not to worry about satisfying my taste. :) BUT she ended up putting a chocolate filling inside the cupcakes... creating a way to satisfy both our taste buds AND my need for color matching. So, so awesome!)

I used some of the fabric from Joy to wrap around the glass candle holders (aka flower vases) I also had at Emily's baby shower. I filled the candle holders with flowers bought from Sam's Club the morning of the party - but the flowers were pretty pitiful. It was difficult finding bright and colorful flowers this time of year - all the harvest colors are out right now!

Anyway - center pieces were flowers and instagram pictures of Sunday. I hung a timeline of photos on a big mirror and set up a few big never-seen-before pictures of Sunday on the welcome table as well. (Hah - it was surprisingly difficult not to share those pictures with you all before the party! I'll be sharing them tomorrow... they are some of my absolute favorites of Sunday, ever!)

The party was relaxing and enjoyable. Everyone came, had brunch and visited for a while before we did the cake smash! And of course the Snapshot Studio was set up as a party activity as well. Overall, it was a lovely morning and I am really glad my preparations were low-key. Having the party catered was a HUGE weight off my shoulders and I will definitely do that again. Although in the future it'll probably be a pizza party for 10 kids, not a brunch for 40 people. :)

Okay, okay! Onto the photos!

The second-to-last picture is of my sister and her daughter, Shelby who both share a birthday with Sunday! All three born on November 20th...! They are some of my favorite people in the whole world so I think that's pretty awesome. :)

Happy Birthday Sunday!!! You are oh-so-loved by sooo many people!
